Orlando Area Chapter Member Awards – Call for Nominations

July 11, 2011

The Orlando Area Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association is now accepting nominations for its two annual awards: Member of the Year and the Bob Davis Award.

The Member of the Year award recognizes one member of the Orlando Area Chapter who has made a significant contribution to the Association through outstanding leadership, demonstrated enthusiasm, extraordinary involvement and loyal support.

The Bob Davis Award is named in honor of Dr. Bob Davis, Ph.D., ABC, APR, CPRC, retired professor from the University of Central Florida who has given tirelessly to our Chapter and FPRA for over three decades. The Bob Davis Award honors an individual who has worked behind the scenes in the past year to support FPRA. It’s our way of recognizing an “unsung hero.”

Candidates must be nominated by someone in the profession. Please include a written narrative of no more than 500 words detailing why the person should be recognized, the accomplishments/contributions that illustrate why the candidate warrants consideration, and the inclusion of committee work and/or other FPRA involvement. Nominees must be active FPRA members in good standing. Individuals may not endorse more than one candidate per award. Nominations for members of our Board of Directors are appropriate.

Nominations should be sent to Orlando Area Chapter President Wendy Jo Moyer, APR at wjmoyer@bellsouth.net no later than Friday, July 29.

Update! Annual Conference Increases Value

July 10, 2011

The newly added Networking at the Phil event is included in the price of registration! This 90-minute event will offer attendees a tour of the beautiful Naples Philharmonic and its art museum. This unique opportunity to enjoy the facility – normally closed at this time of year – was extended to the FPRA by its founder and CEO Myra Janco Daniels. Mrs. Daniels was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal, and happens to be the introductory general session speaker at conference this year.

Another session has been added to our already prodigious lineup. Breakout 1C, “Using Monitoring and Measurement to Advance Organizational Goals,” will offer insight on how best to use quantitative and qualitative metrics to better your own PR efforts.

In addition, conference will include a fourth Counselors’ Network Session this year, more than ever before! On Tuesday, August 9, Joel Curran, Managing Director and Senior Vice President of MSL Chicago, will engage in a private, informal, and interactive discussion exclusively available to CN members.

Much more on registration deadlines, Golden Image Awards, Table Sponsorships, Golf Tournament, Scholarship Fundraiser and more, visit FPRA.org.

Celebrations & Achievements

July 10, 2011

Congratulations to Susan Ennis, APR, CPRC, Jamie Floer, APR, CPRC and Chris Gent, APR, CPRC who have each earned their Certified Public Relations Counselor credential this month.

The credential of Certified Public Relations Counselor or CPRC is the second tier credential offered by FPRA. The certification process was developed to recognize professional growth and achievement of senior members who have already earned the APR designation. Candidates for CPRC must be a member of FPRA and have a minimum of 10 years of professional practice in public relations. For more information about accreditation (APR) or a certification (CPRC), contact Stefanie Macfarlane at smacfarlane@cfl.rr.com.

LUNCHEON SPEAKER PANEL
The Casey Anthony Media Firestorm
How the Casey Anthony Trial has affected the media and what it means for local news

Orlando’s newest attraction isn’t a theme park, but it’s getting more coverage from major outlets like Fox News, CNN and Time. Even national TV shows like Dateline NBC, Dr. Drew and 48 Hours Mystery on CBS are in town to cover it.

What might “it” be, you ask? It is the high profile Casey Anthony murder trial. A media village has been erected across from the Orange County Courthouse where the trial takes place and hundreds of mainstream media from all parts of the country are in town to share the proceedings with eager TV and online viewers. On top of that, this is the first major trial to take place in the social media age in which information is shared much more quickly than what some are comparing to the 1995 OJ Simpson trial.

Join us during the luncheon as we learn from a panel of experts in the State vs. Casey Anthony trial. Hear firsthand how the trial has affected local media coverage of everyday events and learn what this means for you as a PR professional once the trial comes to a close.

Panelists include:
Steve Helling, staff writer, People magazine
John Cutter, digital news manager, Orlando Sentinel
Jennifer Cook, executive producer, Central Florida News 13

Support FPR Education Foundation to Benefit Members, Students

July 10, 2011

The Florida Public Relations Education Foundation is calling upon its members to participate in a $25,000 fundraising campaign that will benefit students in public relations degree programs and members seeking to expand professional development opportunities. Founded 25 years ago, the Foundation provides scholarships for students and members and funding support for those members seeking their APR (Accredited in Public Relations) credential.

“Through this campaign, the Foundation will be able to broaden these scholarship programs,” explained Foundation Chair Adrienne Moore, APR, CPRC. “You could be the next member to receive a conference scholarship, or the next student needing financial assistance to complete his/her public relations course work.”

FPRA members are asked to donate $25 toward this campaign. That’s equal to five coffees at Starbucks or a trip for two to the movie theater.

Moore added, “If everyone donated $25 or even more, we could reach the $25,000 goal and announce our success at Annual Conference.”

Make your checks payable to:  FPR Education Foundation.  Send your check to the FPRA State Office at 40 Sarasota Center Blvd, #107, Sarasota, FL. 34240.

You can also log on at www.fpra.org and click on Scholarships in the left hand corner. On the home page of the FPREF site, use one of the pre-determined donation categories or type in your donation level. Follow the steps to provide your credit card information and hit add to cart to complete your transaction.

Thanks to all of our members for supporting this campaign. Your gifts will benefit not just our current members, but many FPRA members to come. We’re looking for your donation – $25 for our 25th anniversary.
