January Luncheon – The Future of PR in the Academy, in the Profession and in Society

January 12, 2010

Within the last decade, PR practitioners have seen a rapid increase in ways to engage and exchange information with their target audiences.  As the profession advances, what old PR tactics will fade and which new ones will join today’s 24/7 news channels and numerous online resources?  How will these advancements affect PR education, the profession and society?

Dr. Robert C. Chandler, professor of communication and director of the Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida, will present on “The Future of PR in the Academy, the Profession and in Society” at the Florida Public Relations Association – Orlando Area Chapter’s January 28 luncheon.

Dr. Chandler is an internationally recognized researcher and scholar with more than 100 academic and professional papers.  He has authored more than 50 academic and professional publications and is the author or co-author of seven books with three additional books anticipated for publication.  Prior to UCF, Dr. Chandler was the chair of the communication division at the Center for Communication and Business at Pepperdine University and holds an appointment as an adjunct professor of communication and conflict management in the Straus Institute of Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law.

To kick off the new year, Books, Books, Books will also be on site with public relations professional development resources for purchase at 15 percent off retail prices.

The event will take place on Thursday, January 28 at the University Club (150 E Central Blvd., Orlando 32801).  Registration and networking begins at 11:30 a.m. and the luncheon begins at noon.  Cost is $25 for members, $35 for nonmembers and $15 for students.  To register visit, www.fpra-orlando.org.

Start the New Year off Right…Join FPRA Today!

Do your New Year’s resolutions include enhancing your PR skill set or meeting new colleagues?  If so, FPRA-OAC has a special offer for you.

To assist our fellow PR professionals, FPRA-OAC is holding a special promotion where current and potential members have the opportunity to apply for a free chapter membership for 2010. At the end of the promotion, three people will be selected to receive a professional membership paid for by the chapter.

This promotion is meant to provide an opportunity for those who want to be involved, but financially cannot afford to do so. Current members who have already paid for their chapter membership are eligible to participate. If selected, FPRA will reimburse you, or your company, the cost.

Those applying must be able to attend monthly meetings and participate on a chapter committee or submit an article for PRoclaimer, our chapter newsletter.  To apply, simply complete the application and send to Ryan Dumas, Assistant VP of Membership, at rdumas@ucpcfl.org.  Application should be received no later than January 31, 2010.

February Luncheon – Save the Date

January 12, 2010

Save the date for the Florida Public Relations Association-Orlando Area Chapter’s first breakfast meeting on February 25, 2010.  Annetta Wilson, president of Annetta Wilson Media Training & Success Coaching will present her presentation skills workshop, “Sorry to Burst Your Bubble, But It Is How You Show Up!”

How would you know if you’re turning people off?  The way people perceive you can mean the difference between success and failure in business and your personal life.  The risk of being misunderstood puts your reputation, business, job and relationships on the line.  You CAN develop the ability to appear confident, comfortable and in control in front of an audience and behind a microphone. Develop the ability to stay “on message.”  Learn the inside secrets to managing the energy in the room so you’re not boring people to death.  Presentation skills coaching helps you read the room, and know if you’re connecting.

Annetta, a certified mastery coach and certified trainer, is a business strategist specializing in presentation skills coaching, communication skills coaching and media training for public figures, entrepreneurs and executives.  She is a talent coach for on-air journalists at CNN and has coached for Walt Disney World’s Ambassador Program and the eWomen Network. An award-winning journalist, Annetta logged over three decades in the broadcast industry as a television news anchor, reporter, producer, talk show host and writer.
